Yesterday, we joined 6,000 fellow Seattleites who took to the streets in support of Join the Impact’s nationwide rally against California’s Proposition 8. As out bisexual members of the LGBT community, we felt compelled to join hands with our queer sisters and brothers and let our voices be heard on the issue of marriage equality in this country.
Our partners joined us in Volunteer Park, where we heard King County Executive Ron Sims and many others present their thoughts and support to the crowd. And then we marched en masse out of the park, past one of our fair city’s most beautiful public art installations, Isamu Noguchi’s Black Sun, and on to to Westlake Center.
It was a day to remember. And an inspiring one considering the unbelievably quick gestation of Join the Impact’s massive grassroots effort of bringing LGBT troops together in rallies scheduled simultaneously around the country. In just a few days, we had gone from a place of considering the compelling piece on Keith Olbermann’s Countdown to marching for a cause that is gaining strength among the people.
Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Words to live by in our book. We are proud to be active members of our community and will continue to support the efforts of furthering equal human rights to everyone, everywhere, and for ever after.
