This land is made for you and me
Power to the People!

Wow.  What a day!  Yesterday, we spent the morning viewing the Inauguration with our extended family at a local party hosted by the groundbreaking Worldchanging folks at the Spitfire Grill.  Highlights, according to the Matisse Twins, have to be, in order of appearance: 1) the proclamation of Marian Robinson as the First Grandmother, 2) John Williams’ piece Air and Simple Gifts - beautifully played by Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Anthony McGill, and Gabriela Montero, 3) President Obama’s outstanding inaugural address, and 4) the soulful benediction by Rev. Joseph E. Lowery, the “dean of the civil rights movement”.

Tears of joy streamed down our faces as we saw the 44th President of the United States step into office.  As President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama stood together, bound forever in this momentous occasion in human history, they seemed a formidable and compassionate pair…able and ready to lead our nation with strength, dignity, and grace.

Later that evening, we found ourselves enmeshed in a throng of joyous revelers, banding together in the words of Woody Guthrie’s ‘This Land is Your Land’.  Never before had the lyrics rung true on such a deep, gut level:

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
A voice was chanting, As the fog was lifting,
This land was made for you and me.

And the fog is lifting…and the sun is shining…and it’s a beautiful day!

Dreaming the change we want to see in the world
Power to the People!

Today, as we both recognized and celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, we took time to listen to some of his eloquent and powerful speeches.  What follows is an excerpt of one of his writings that is unbelievably poignant, given that we are hours away from seeing the change that Dr. King so beautifully inspired in the world.

“One of the great liabilities of history is that all too many people fail to remain awake through great periods of social change.  Every society has its protectors of the status quo and its fraternities of the indifferent who are notorious for sleeping through revolutions.  But today our very survival depends on our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant, and face the challenge of change.”

We pledge to be awake, even when dreaming the change we want to see in the world.  And we vow to partner with you to dream the change you want to see in your world.

This is about love
Power to the People!

Yesterday, we joined 6,000 fellow Seattleites who took to the streets in support of Join the Impact’s nationwide rally against California’s Proposition 8.  As out bisexual members of the LGBT community, we felt compelled to join hands with our queer sisters and brothers and let our voices be heard on the issue of marriage equality in this country.

Our partners joined us in Volunteer Park, where we heard King County Executive Ron Sims and many others present their thoughts and support to the crowd.  And then we marched en masse out of the park, past one of our fair city’s most beautiful public art installations, Isamu Noguchi’s Black Sun, and on to to Westlake Center.

It was a day to remember.  And an inspiring one considering the unbelievably quick gestation of Join the Impact’s massive grassroots effort of bringing LGBT troops together in rallies scheduled simultaneously around the country.  In just a few days, we had gone from a place of considering the compelling piece on Keith Olbermann’s Countdown to marching for a cause that is gaining strength among the people.

Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Words to live by in our book.  We are proud to be active members of our community and will continue to support the efforts of furthering equal human rights to everyone, everywhere, and for ever after.
